FAQs

Below are the most frequently asked questions patients have about dentistry and oral health issues. If you have any other questions, or would like to schedule an appointment, we would love to hear from you.

Why Regular Dental Checkups Matter

We recommend seeing your dentist at least twice a year -- or more often if advised -- to help keep your teeth and gums healthy.

At each visit, we do more than just clean your teeth and check for cavities. Your exam includes:

  • X-rays to spot decay, bone loss, or hidden issues

  • Oral cancer screening of your mouth, lips, and neck

  • Gum disease check to catch signs early

  • Review of your medical history and any new medications

  • Check of existing dental work like fillings or crowns

  • Thorough cleaning to remove plaque and tartar

  • Polishing to lift surface stains

  • Personalized hygiene and dietary tips to support your smile

These routine visits are a key part of preventing bigger problems and keeping your oral health on track. We're here to help you stay healthy -- one smile at a time!

Porcelain veneers are ultra-thin, custom crafted shells designed to cover the front surface of your teeth. Made from high quality porcelain, they’re highly durable and resistant to staining, making them a popular choice for those looking to enhance or restore the natural beauty of their smile.

Veneers can correct a variety of cosmetic dental concerns, including:

  • Deep discoloration or staining

  • Uneven or unwanted spaces between teeth

  • Worn, chipped, or slightly crowded teeth

  • Misshapen teeth or teeth that appear too small or large

The process typically involves two visits. During the first visit, we’ll take precise impressions of your teeth and lightly shape the surfaces to ensure a seamless fit. These impressions are then sent to a professional dental lab, where your veneers are custom made to match your unique smile.

Once ready, your veneers are carefully bonded to your teeth using a strong dental adhesive. In some cases, a special light is used to ensure the bond sets securely.

Porcelain veneers are a transformative solution that can deliver a stunning, natural looking smile -- boosting both confidence and comfort with long lasting results.

Good brushing and flossing habits are key to preventing plaque buildup, cavities, and gum disease.

Plaque is a sticky film of bacteria that forms on your teeth and gums. If not removed, it can harden into tartar and lead to gum and bone damage, so daily care matters!

Brushing Tips:

  • Brush twice a day, especially before bed, using a soft bristled or electric toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste.

  • Hold the brush at a 45° angle to your gums and use gentle, circular motions.

  • Clean all surfaces of your teeth, including the outside, inside, and chewing surfaces.

  • Brush your tongue to help remove bacteria and freshen your breath.

  • Electric toothbrushes are a great option that are both effective and easy to use!

Flossing Tips:

  • Floss once a day to clean between teeth and under the gumline.

  • Use about 12–16 inches of floss, guiding it gently between teeth with a sawing motion.

  • Curve the floss into a “C” shape around each tooth and slide it up and down.

  • Floss holders can help if traditional flossing feels tricky.

Rinsing:

Rinse your mouth with water after brushing or meals. If using mouthwash, ask your dentist which type is right for you.

With just a few daily habits, you can keep your smile clean, healthy, and bright!

A bright, white smile is one of the most common things patients ask for -- and with professional teeth whitening, it’s easier than ever to achieve.

Professional whitening is a safe, non-invasive treatment that lightens the color of natural enamel and can dramatically enhance your smile. While over the counter options exist, they’re often less effective and not always ADA approved.

Discoloration happens over time due to aging, certain foods and drinks (like coffee, tea, and wine), smoking, and even some medications or childhood conditions like fluorosis. Dr. Lara and her team will evaluate your teeth to determine if whitening is right for you, and may recommend alternative options deeper stains if desired.

Since whitening only works on natural enamel, we’ll also check any of your existing dental work to ensure everything blends seamlessly.

Whitening Options:

  • At-home trays: Custom-made trays and whitening gel worn for 30 minutes a day or overnight, with results in a few weeks. These can purchased at our office for a discounted price, so be sure to ask our staff about this!

  • In-office treatment: Quick, noticeable results in just one visit using a bleaching gel and light technology.

Some mild tooth sensitivity may occur, but it’s temporary and usually fades within a few days.

With the right treatment and occasional touch-ups, you can enjoy a noticeably whiter, more confident smile!

Bad breath can be unpleasant and even embarrassing, but you're not alone. Almost everybody experience bad breath here and then, especially in the morning.

In many cases, bacteria on the tongue are the main culprit. In fact, studies show that simply brushing your tongue can reduce bad breath by up to 70%!

Common Causes:

  • Morning dry mouth – Less saliva while sleeping allows bacteria to grow.

  • Certain foods – Garlic, onions, and other strong ingredients can affect your breath.

  • Poor oral hygiene – Trapped food particles feed odor-causing bacteria.

  • Gum disease, cavities, or old dental appliances – These can harbor bacteria.

  • Dry mouth (xerostomia) – Caused by medications, mouth breathing, or dehydration.

  • Tobacco use – Dries the mouth and leaves a strong odor.

  • Dieting or missed meals – Can reduce saliva and increase odor-causing ketones.

  • Underlying health conditions – Diabetes, sinus infections, or liver/kidney issues can also contribute.

How to Prevent Bad Breath:

  • Brush and floss daily – Don’t forget to clean your tongue!

  • Stay hydrated – Drinking water helps flush away bacteria.

  • Visit your dentist regularly – Routine checkups and cleanings are key.

  • Quit smoking – Ask us for resources if you need support.

  • Use an antiseptic mouthwash – These help kill bacteria, not just mask odor.

If your breath remains persistent despite good oral care, Dr. Lara and her team may recommend a medical evaluation to check for other underlying causes.

A fresh smile starts with a healthy mouth, and we’re here to help!
